Abstract:
After differentiating between pollution and geochemically natural levels of potentially hazardous elements like heavy metals, the different global compartments with special emphasis on the soil are discussed. The maximum permissible levels of heavy metals and other inorganic contaminants as well as of aromatic and polycyclic hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater are tabled. The results of several studies on the behavior of some of these substances in soils are summarized and discussed. Possible techniques for soil purification and rehabilitation are listed.
